Hydralisk Firing
by masterofhobbiton (Watch for feedback, Add to favorites)

Here I've used my hydralisk model to try to emulate the firing flaps that open up on the sprite hydralisk. I think this is an accurate representation of the pose, although in the sprite you can make out the head going so low that the frill part goes vertical, and I still don't know where the flaps open up from.

Note that due to comments about my lighting, I have simply used a default setup this time around.

I did not know they shot out spines from there.
Cool EXP.

Me neither, my conception is that they lauch their needle spines from their sides, but you're right about those flaps though.

Now, if I were you I would concentrate on getting certain spots discerned from that brown coloration, for example ribcage, which is not just brown plate, making muscle tissue have organic and sleek look and add it under Hydra's arm carapace and in other fitting places. Also, Hydralisks have human-style jaw between their twin jaws, remember to add that in your model. But picture tells it better than thousand words so you'll get the idea better with these pictures than from my explanation, so please take a look at this link and pictures you'll find there, I'm sure they'll help you making better Hydra model.

Thanks for the link. I know that my hydralisk is missing a lot of the slimy style tissue, but I didn't want to go too far and model individual tendons and things like they did for the cinematics, and I chose not to add the lower jaw because it just looked bad with it, I went with the cinematic look where you never see it and the mandibles are joined together instead of the portrait look.

Now this is cool. I'm speechless.

...

By the way: ...something is wrong with colors though; they are not vivid enough (all your textures)...

I imagine Hydralisks as variation on real-life praying mantises, so I would pose them as such when they attack (you know how mantises spread their stuff and take their "arms" in).

Hydralisk is about the coolest thing you've showed here thus now.

Personally, I wondered more why they didn't shoot spines in the cinematics; the green fluid that shoots out would've been awesome in 3D

This is great, despite the anatomy anomalies PZ kindly pointed out. Actually, I thought hydras launched spines from their chests or mouth, and the opening flaps above their head were for another purpose (intimidation, air pressure gain to launch the spines, etc.)

You also forgot the nostrils and the tail "spines"

EXP!

I know that the sprites have tail spines, and some sources say they fire from grooves in the jaw, but nostrils? I can't see them in the wallpapers, cinematics, or portrait. where are they?

My bad, no nostrils

I suppose I got confused by the shape of your jaws

Wow! You're really into the Zerg. But I think you should fix the textures. They're way too plastiky.

I PMed you BLooDBRiNGer.

The head does almost touch the ground in the sprite, but when I tried it it didn't work so well with my model; when I made a full animation with recoil and stuff, the neck was going through the chest, the frill was going through the hood, etc. So I decided to show the picture like this because this was the only pose that mostly looked right and that I could animate.

Rest assured that there will be at least some kind of melee & ranged unit in Starcraft 2. For Pete's sake, they had meleeing air units in Warcraft III!
