Zerglings: Then and Now

Here are my two good zergling models; on the right is the original-style hydraling from the alpha stages of starcraft when the cinematics were made, and on the left is the newer, more SCG style zergling. The right one should really be more insectlike, and the left one should have darker, red-purple skin and more, rougher armor, but I like the broodwar zerglings the best so my creations always end up having BW influence.

Technicaly cool (really good, better than I would do), but those two are not real Zerglings.
I wouldn't bother with anything else but official StarCraft units. (you can see my Zergling, it is not what it should be either, but I like to think of them as tiny little most insect-like (of all them) buggers)
Look at cinematic "Wasteland patrol" (try YouTube - there's all) - Zerg are insect-like (carapce that interlaps and stuff), and you've made it look dinosaur-like (skin, endoskeleton).
(because of program that I use for 3D modeling I cannot make 3d objects with "skeleton" structures inside, so organic stuff is not something I'm good at - I prefere separated parts)
About these two fellows - the left one - that's SC-Ghost improvisation (and I don't know what they were thinking...); the second one - the same mistake I did long ago - I didn't notice the third pair of "arms" (but, i guess that's that alpha version youmentioned in the introduction).
I know they made Zerglings look similar to Hydras in some cinematics (Broodwar), but I would rather take ingame portraits and outlooks as refferences. |

Thanks for the comment. My first models were dinosaurs, so whenever I make a quadrepedal body setup it always ends up looking like that; I have since watched wasteland patrol again and I agree with you that it needs to be more bug like. I am fully aware that ingame zerglings (with upper arms and portrait face) are definitave, but I was trying to make a zergling that would match my hydralisk at the time, so I went with the cinematic look. In the wasteland patrol cinematic you can see behind the hydralisk at the end two zerglings that look very much like mine. |

Neat. What program did you use?
I just downloaded Blender am having a blast, even if my crap still stinks.
As soon as I figure out textures and materials I am going to make something SC. |

I used Animation: Master, although I orginally started modeling in blender. Go for it! |

GOOD.
I go with Goran here, I also consider in-game portraits and sprites as definite. I TOTALLY HATE the cinematic zerglings, they lack originality.
NOW! to your work
Perhaps the dinosaur-bug dilemma could be solved by just adding exoskeleton segments to its body, overlapping the legs a little and making it more buggish. In Animation: Master, can you use control vertexes? If so, I'd advice you to curve the teeth a little, it's a simple process and can boost your quality a lot. The right ling has an overized head! lol! tone it down and bulk the body a little, looks like you like zerg, any clue on when we'll see an Ultralisk from you?

Come on, the cinematic 'lings are so much cooler! Plus, they sound better, they don't snort like the in-game ones. I don't have the teeth curved because in the hydralisk they actually look a lot more like human teeth and I was going for that kind of look. An ultralisk would be a bit much of a challenge, but I've already made a new zergling with about the same changes as you've suggested independantly, it's waiting for approval right now |

He, he! I really agree with ITSTORRASQUE4U. The head on the right does look oversized.
I may be into machines and metal like the Siege Tank and Scout (and don't know much about organic modelling). But I would suggest you fix the textures on both. They're too plastic-like.
Hey, try using 3DS Max! It is so cool and extremely versatile! It comes with tutorials for everything it is capable of. I've been with it for almost 6 months now. |

Next thing you know, zerglings will have like 10 claws in StarCraft 2.

i think your first one is better, although it is less detailed, at least its proportionate. |
