Eyes in the Darkness
by masterofhobbiton (Watch for feedback, Add to favorites)

What if there was passage of time in SC? You send out a zealot to scout... His sight range is low, and in the gloom the map appears to be deserted when suddenly, small orange lights appear all around....

It's cool, but it would be better if you made a background and more complicated terrain.

exceptional for the idea

Yeh, I should've given the terrain a bump map and made it fade out... I'm seeing if UltraZealot can give it some cool effects through SoW.

Actually, if you've read the books, you'll know that Protoss have great night vision and can even see through smoke. He would have seen the Zerglings before they got that close.
The upper legs are a bit shorter, they should be the longest of the three segments.
The glowing parts really make the piece. His eyes are very pretty.

Just one question: Where in the name of Adun is his headcrest?

-Tassadar made me do it!
-En Taro Adun sucka!

Thanks for the comments; and I haven't read any SC books except for Liberty's Crusade in a long time. The legs on this model suck; and will eventually be redone for SoW.

The answer to your question: Notice how in original SC, there are no in game toss with crests. Look at Fenix in the cinematic, the guy on the toss victory screen, the 'lot on the campaign selection, the zealot portrait, etc. I personally like these protoss much better so I model them.

More headcrests. I'll post more when I can get the Starcraft manual onto the scanner.

You really really don't want to get into an argument with me about this. I know that in the concept art and BW and SCG and SC2 they have frills, but I don't like them and no frill is still official as it's in original cinematics and gameplay. Look at the portraits!

Tassadar and Aldaris portraits have crests, Tassadar has a crest in his cinematic, most of the official concept art pictures have crests. Just look through the manual once every so often. Pages 73, 76 and 93 work well enough.

If this is a personal piece, then okay. Freedom of genetic evolution and Tribal differences. But if you're drawing and modelling for SoW (which you brag about quite a bit), you have to go with the commonly accepted version. This is why ALL video game companies - Blizzard included - have Art Directors. That is also the reason why ALL concept art drawings have head-crests.

Some of the 3-D models might be missing their crests due to miscommunication, or a small detail slipping past the Art Director unnoticed. A fair example for this: Artanis. Artanis is a High Templar, recently promoted to Praetor. Problem is, he appears in all cinematics with cut nerve-cords. That would make him a Dark Templar and unqualified for the rank he currently holds. Blizzard later admitted that this was a MISTAKE. A modeller ACCIDENTALLY cut the nerve-cords. The character was already rigged and animated before anyone noticed. Perhaps there is a possibility that crests held the same unfortunate fate as Artanis? Whatever the case, it was rectified in Brood War and Starcraft II.

Pointing to the Protoss Defeat Zealot and Fenix during the cinematic don't prove majority; they are based on the same model, but with altered armor and color.

Two more points: The Zergling heads look like Hydralisks, and the Zerglings are missing the extra limbs on top. Did you Copy-Paste the Hydralisk head onto all the Zerglings?
Frankly, the Psi-blade and eyes are the only parts that would make it into anything official.

-Tassadar made me do it!
-En Taro Adun sucka!

P.S.: You can't get anymore official than the Art Director or the Vice President of Creative Development. Again, pages 73, 76 and 93.

Need I say more?

Yes I do. Hard to see over Ramsey's head, but Zamara's crest is fading into the distance:

Okay, NOW I'm done. I think.

omg....

lol, how long did it take you to type this?

Yes; I did say that the crests were fixed in SC2 and BW, but I don't like them, you didn't need to restate it.

omg, not the zergling debate again. I intended the ling to be unnoficial; I was making a replica of the one from the BW intro, it has the hydra head and lack of arms.

I didn't copy paste the ling head.

Oh man, that'd be hillarious if you were right about the crests being like artanis's psionic appendages. They release a game where every single portrait shows protoss wrong, even though different modellers made them, and then a year later some blizzard guy notices! Ah, I would've paid to see that. XD

Oh, and BTW, I haven't intended to brag about SoW, sorry. For all of my models for them we're going for the cinematic style (alpha/beta), so the hydralings are in but all of my protoss for them will have frills, much to my dismay.

Only a couple minutes, actually.
And it's not every single portrait. Did you not read the part about Aldaris and Tassadar's portraits?

Oh, and Metzen's "Trial" picture finally got a name. It's been in the manual since the game came out, but was never on their site. They just recently added it. It's called "Over Reverent".

You two, SUSH!! LOLZ, ROFL! XD.

@MoH: InsaneExecutor has a point about Protoss head frills. She's right about sticking to the Official Art director's concepts.

@InsaneExecutor: You didn't have to be so hostile about this. Anyways, you seem to know alot about Protoss looks. Do you also do SC fan art?

I see you never botherd to change the proportions on your zealot... Shame on you...

I do like your zerg...

You would get and avg. for having the same zealot with bad proportions, but the zerg save the day.

I vote good.

"His eyes are very pretty" InsaneExecutor's a she?
I can usually tell by how people type.

"The upper legs are a bit shorter here, they should be the longest of the three segments."

That's some good advice^^^

The zealot's legs have the same spacing as the raptor above^^^

er length for each segment are the same is what I'm saying.
