"How did this happen to me?", thought John, captain, 236th spacebourne elite. "I was out of boot camp for a year before anything like this happened. They knew from day 1 that I was a fighter. They gave me the only new gun...just me...(sob) why couldn't they have just paid for new guns.(sob)... I'm... I'm the only one left.", thought John.

three days ago.......

"Alright grunts, today you will fight the enemy. You will shoot, you will punch, you will do whatever it takes to achieve victory!", shouted the tough colonel Jacobson. "SIR, YES SIR!", shouted the rest of the platoon. John was the second in command because of his skill. "We have been called upon for aid by the Tarsonis Barracks. They are under seige by the zerg.", said colonel Jackson. "Prepare for deployment from the cruiser.", said a voice over the radio. The sound of hydraulics moving, and metal scraping ensued as the hatch opened and dropship hook released the dropship into the atmosphere above Tarsonis. "This is a rough patch, we're already under enemy fire.", said the pilot. Just then a bony blast of tissue and acid hit the cockpit and instantaneously dispatched the pilot and copilot.
The ship crashed into the Tarsonis Desert, only John, colonel Jacobson, and a handfull of men survived. In the distance, the survivors saw the other dropships landing. The men saw several zerg emerging from burrows, surrounding them all. The men open fired, spraying zergling guts everywhere. Bullets and hydra-spines flying, grenades blowing away burrows, those are the parts of battle. 1/2 of John's shots were lethal to their victims. One by one, however, the teams guns jammed. The men tried to take shelter within the crashed vessel. The army hadn't expected this, the men were merely supposed to be support,so they had surplus rifles. John however, was awarded a newer rifle for his exceedingly accurate shots in combat. John and Jacobson were fighting back to back, fending off the zerg. Suddenly, an ultralisk broke through the cliffside. It charged forward towards the commotion. With one blow, it flipped the crashed vessel, along with the now crushed men. The situation of Jacobson, and John seemed hopeless, as they were surrounded by zerglings, hydralisks, and an ultralisk. "Run to the barracks when I say so." "But sir!" "Just DO IT."
The colonel mowed down the lings and hydras in front of the ultralisk. The ultralisk charged at the colonel, but he set his grenades, looked at John and said, "Now!" John took off. The explosion knocked him to the ground. He looked back and saw a smouldering crater full of blood. John saw something burrowing towards him. He struggled to his feet and ran as fast as he could. The zerg creature was gaining, closer, closer, CLOSER! The creatures mouth was visible and wide open, ready to devour John.
As the burrowed creature charged, John reached for his grenades. He dropped the grenades in the mouth of the beast. Bloody dirt flew into the air. John grabbed his assult rifle and held it tightly. He headed towards the commotion. It took him hours to reach the spot, and what he found there horrified him. the mutilated carcasses of his comrades were the greeting sight. A mere handfull of zerg were the casualties on the opposing side. He saw smears of blood leading down some tunnels, alerting him that there were prisoners. John followed the smears into the planets core. He knew that if he stayed in the tattered barracks he would die anyway, so he should at least try to fulfill his mission. However, the deeper he went, the more suspicious it was not to see many zerg. When he reached the bottom of the cavern, he saw an enourmous pustule, a true cerebrate. A cerebrate lost since the fall of the first overmind. Its gelatinous blobs reached for the few living prisoners. And sadly, it engulfed them, absorbing them into itself, and its fold.
John watched as it absorbed them. As the last of the men were dragged away, to be used later, the swarm around the cerebrate scattered throughout the caves. John snuck around the tunnel, into the room where the prisoners were being held. Suddenly, a driping sound behind John alerted him to the presence of hydralisks. He turned and blasted at the faces of the hydralisks. They dropped to the ground, their exoskeletons clanking on the cold, rocky floor. He knew he had to hurry, because the hydralisks would have alerted the other defences. A sticky mass of creep covered the prisoners. He uncovered the first, and saw that he was already dead. However, the second was alive, for better or for worse. "Please kill me.", the prisoner pleaded. "You're better off like that if you're down here anyway.", said John. And with that John shot the man with his pistol. At last, John uncovered the third. The third was a protoss zealot, of the name xa'ruul. "Are you ok?", asked John. "Yes, and thank Adun you came.", said xa'ruul. "What happened?", asked John. "Silence, I sense a presence among us!", said xa'ruul.
Just then, an egg filled to the brim with puss and creep burst open, releasing a young zerg creature. The creatures fangs protruded from it's mouth. It leapt at John, but he batted it away with his assult rifle. Unfortunately, the creature knocked the gun away. The creature scrambled to its feet, and leapt at John. John ran to the corpse of a nearby firebat, and grabbed its arm. He aimed at the creature, and pushed the button. But he didn't realize that the button was rusted over! . xa'ruul caught the creature by its head, and threw it into the wall. xa'ruul picked up John's gun and tossed it to him. John fired at the creature as it charged, but it jumped at him. John raised his rifle, and the creature landed right on it. John just squeezed the trigger slowly, and sent the bullet-ridden creature clear across the room. Suddenly, the other eggs covering the wall all began to hatch.
John and xa'ruul headed for the tunnel John had entered the room from. Xa'ruul turned and tossed a small golden plasma grenade next to the firebat. As xa'ruul left, he heard the bomb set off the flamethrower fluids, setting the whole hatching room ablaze. To Johns dismay, he saw a squad of zerglings and 3 hydralisks blocking that tunnel's exit. xa'ruul slashed at the zerglings, while John fired at the hydralisks faces, to keep them busy. Once the last ling hit the floor, John stopped firing, and xa'ruul leapt forward, slasing the hydalisks' eyes right out of their sockets. As thert faces smouldered, xa'ruul punched 2 of them, effectively impailing them. And with a quick turn, xa'ruul slashed the remaining hydralisks head clean off.
The two warriors ran out of that tunnel into a room with passages to many others. Unknown to them, however, a creature dropped from the ceiling of the previous hallway, and consumed the corpses of its comrads. As it finished its eyes lit up red, and a thick orange smoke filled the hallway through which John and xa'ruun had entered. "Now we can't even see them coming.", said John. But right away, xa'ruul jumped up, and spun with his blades out. Thick, dark-red blood splashed against the walls, and a loud THUD echoed through the halls. Before them lie a half-decapitated ultralisk. "Whoa!", shouted John. "You must be quiet.", said xa'ruul. As the orange smoke dicipated, the two warriors saw the end of the tunnel. And behind it was the cerebrate, being fed minerals by dozens of drones. John watched the drones gnaw the mineral ore. The two of them crept into the room. Just then, a zergling hiding above the tunnel entrance leapt down. But xa'ruul turned and stabbed his psi-blade right through the creatures heart. The drones suddenly turned and rushed John, but his rifle made quick work of the weak drones. Swarms of zerg crept in from 3 adjacent tunnels. John fired into each, in order to keep the zerg at bay. But even that didn't prepare them for what happened next.
On top of the cerebrate, a new zerg creature rose. 6 long bony spines emerged from the creatures back in rows of 3. It raised its lizard-like head, and opened its tooth filled mouth. Globs of drool ran down the zerg's neck. It stretched its long bony arms, each supporting a 3 fingered claw. It's muscular legs led to powerful feet with 3 claws on the end of each foot, and 1 pointing back on the heel. It's tail was just as long as the rest of the creatures body. 3 rows of bone plates ran down to the end of the tail. Then it let out a monstrous howl. This was truly a demonic entity in the eyes of the xel'naga themselves.
The beast let out a monstrous howl. "Hold back the swarm, this one's mine.", said xa'ruul. John fired into the caverns, holding the zerg at bay. The demon jumped down from the cerebrate, and landed before xa'ruul. xa'ruul struck first, but his psi-blades bounced off of the demonic exo-skeleton. The demon struck back with a swipe, crushing xa'ruul's shield, and smashing his shield generator. xa'ruul kicked the demon backwards. He quickly ran his finger over a line on his gauntlet. The light on his power modulator dimmed, but his psi-blades suddenly grew so bright, no light on earth could compare. The demon still outmatched him in speed however. xa'ruul struck, but the demon easily evaded the attack, and countered by sending it's tail crashing into xa'ruul's mighty thigh. His golden armor reflected the great light of his powerful psi-blades. In the light, xa'ruul could see the look on the demonic face, a look of hunger. xa'ruul realized that this creature was from a world nothing like his own. It would stop at nothing to feed, or die trying. xa'ruul leapt up and slashed at the demon. It tried to evade, but xa'ruul spun around and slashed again before he even landed. A bony chunk of the demon's left shoulder went flying. In retribution, the demon slashed xa'ruul's wrist blade. xa'ruul's blade dimmed until it was gone.
"I know now what I must do.", said xa'ruul. "John, you saved my life, and now I will finally fully repay the debt." "I don't understand.", said John as he continued to fire. "You may not know, but I am a zealot in training to become a templar. My armor is meant not only to defend me from others, but to defend others from me.", explained xa'ruul. "But-", said john. "RUN. Go now!", shouted xa'ruul. John dropped his gun, as it had only a few shots left anyway, and ran. The zerg in the tunnels quickly charged through the dozens of bullet-filled corpses, sloshing through creep and blood. The zerg gathered around xa'ruul and the demon in 1 giant circle. xa'ruul slowly undid the latches on his gauntlets. Each gauntlet dropped to the ground. Next xa'ruul tore off his chest armor. The 2 peices smashed the earth below them as they landed on the rocky ground. xa'ruul's fists were surrounded by a blue aura. The demon charged and leapt at xa'ruul. It pushed xa'ruul to the floor beneath it, but xa'ruul rolled and kicked the demon off of him, to the edge of the circle. xa'ruul scrambled to his feet and blasted the demon with a psycic blast.
The demon became enfuriated and charged xa'ruul. He blasted it several more times, but it kept charging. It smashed xa'ruul's ribs with the back of it's hand, and sent him flying to the edge of the circle. He stood as the zerg crept closer. Suddenly, a storm of lightning behind him knocked the zerg away from xa'ruul. The demon had already leapt at xa'ruul and was a foot away, when a flash of blue light froze the demon in mid-air. The zerg all rushed into the circle at once. A swirling vortex of energy surrounded xa'ruul, as the zerg came ever closer. An explosion of fire, and plasma filled the room. As the blood-red dust and smoke settled, the cerebrate noticed all of it's minions in the room were charred and twitching, all but 1.
The demon had been sent crashing through a cave wall, but was once again rising to it's feet. It looked upand saw an exhausted zealot gasping for breath. Without much of a fight, the demon tackled xa'ruul and soon after... dismembered him. More minions flooded the room and charged upward throughout all of the exits. John was running as fast as he could, loading his pistol, just in case. John was horrified when he saw the dropship that had come to save survivors was blazing, and that the crew was dead. John ducked for cover in the nearest place he could think of, the barracks.
"I guess that's how it happened.", said John to himself.
Suddenly, a zergling started sniffing the wall that John was hiding in. John loked out a crack in the wall, and to his relief, saw the zergling walking away, out of sight. A silence fell over the barracks. "I should stop now, I still hear footsteps...

"Amazing!", said general Smith, "How did you get this recording anyway?" "Why don't you tell me general...", said the man next to the general, as blood began to drip from the man's mouth, as well as something... purple.

----------------------------------EPILOGUE------------------------------------------------
The exact fate of John was never discovered. The barracks was never recovered, and Terran H.Q. unanimously decided that it's best to stop trying. Security tapes revealed that the man who killed General Smith and the zerg demon were one in the same. A security team rushed to save the general, but found that the general had already been mauled, and that the demon had escaped into the air vent. The demon was never caught. General Smith's flagship was discovered by a science vessel 3 months later, but more disturbing than that...the entire crew had been slaughtered.....

yes, this is my trumphant return! i am overjoyed to see that you have returned as well. this old place has changed so much in my months of absence. however, i couldnt deprive the newcomers of my former greatness. i have been uninspired lately, and so am sadly still away from writing. it is easy to see the decaying quality of my work, climaxing at "birth of a monster" well, yes, i have returned, in all my greatness. ps: you might want to check out killzone, which has been my other hobby lately.

Pretty crummy descriptions, flow, and lacking in anysort of, 'something', that would keep my reading.

Honestly: a really mediocre story overall with a few interesting parts that aren't very well executed.

BTW I've been here since 2001(?), I think. Nice to see an oldie' back.

its so wonderful to be back...and yet, i feel like a stranger in my own territory. i remember 057, i talked to him awhile, but he just wasnt the same. nothin wrong with him, he was just not the same. i never really got along with 037. i asked her what was going on, and apparently, she left out some details *cough, overshield*. ya, 1 person single-handedly ruining a large scale project, what a bitch. its good to be back!

PROTOGOD...i dont have a saying so whatever.(ps, any ideas for a closing statement? just a thought)

You mean 056 right? 076? 056? 057??? I thought 057 was kicked out in the SPARTAN I Project. Weird. 037 crashed OVERSHIELD. Damn her. She hacked into our database systems and jacked them up. She also discouraged our hard working Spartans who were running the thing. Closing statement? How about: "Protogod...will be back..."
Just a suggestion

Whichever one it was (it was in the fifties.) And tell me what you think of my idea for a closing statement "PROTOGOD...will be back, and if you dont like it fuck off" just a thought. My inspiration for that was UncleMonkey, another vet. that i left on, well lets just say, not very good terms. Here's to you, my old nemesis. Damn, I gotta find a better nemesis.
