StarCraft and Brood War
StarCraft was first released for the PC on March 31, 1998 with a Mac version released later in 1999. The original pre-expansion game, colloquially known as "vanilla" by many fans, introduced players to the Koprulu Sector and it's inhabitants. Set in the 25th century, the story revolved around three species fighting for dominance. These included the Terrans, basically convicts and other undesirables exiled from Earth who turned out to be highly adaptable; the Zerg, a race of "xenomorphs" (insect-like) pursuing genetic perfection, seemingly obsessed with assimilating races and jacking their distinctive characteristics to the nth degree to better support the Swarm; and the Protoss, a humanoid technologically advanced race who were also gifted with psionic abilities and rather enigmatic, rarely involving themselves with anyone else.
On November 30th, 1998 Blizzard Entertainment released Brood War the official expansion which brought fans a completely new single-player story that included 3 campaigns around 10 missions each (the Zerg campaign had a few more). This expansion brought new units, spells, story, multi-player maps, and more importantly more balance to the game. When people discuss StarCraft they usually refer to Brood War. Today StarCraft has sold over 11 million copies, and is loved by many the world over, for example in Korea where it is extremely popular.
