All of us at Starcraft.org are extremely proud to announce that through cooperation with our great friends at Blizzard Entertainment, particularly Karune, we are able to present to you -- with more information following from Blizzard, we're quite sure -- the first public glimpses into the 3rd race from the StarCraft universe, the Zerg.

In-depth analysis of the screenshots will be provided later in the week, for now we hope you enjoy these first looks at the Zerg Mutalisk, Baneling, Zergling, and Overlord!

Remember to click the images for a much larger image.
And check back soon for further information on the Zerg race as it becomes available!

I look at this pictures, and I can't help but think that in some ways, the graphics look even more un-realistic than they did in SC 1.

Oh AJ, you old you...

The resolution of these pictures is bigger then my computer screen.... KOOOOOOOOL!

Whilst I somewhat agree with Darkhightemp, I actually don't mind the style. What I'm getting at here is that it looks good for what it is: it doesn't try to look too realistic, ect.. and hence not actually look good.

If that made sense. You know a Nintendo DS? Have you seen games on it that try too look realistic? Yea...

Anyways, as awesomely wonderful as these picture are, I can't quite help but notice that there ain't much Zerg in the first one...

Nice pictures. About quality: People are developing a style these days. A study has been done that players do not like their video games looking too real. So different some video game companies are restraining their artists from their most realistic abilities. Whether or not this is the case I don't know.

So, does anybody recall seeing that Zerg worm-type thing on the Protoss SC2 Gameplay vid? Is that an underground transport or something? An organism made to replace the Nydus Canal? Any info would be nice. I always thought it'd be cool to have a Zerg unit able to move while burrowed, like the Lurker, only not immobile. Of course, that could potentially skew the balance, depending upon what sort of attacks the burrowed Zerg unit had.

Jaxander: Blizzard said they were called Nydus Worms. In fact, I think the guy talking about them in the video actually said that too.

All we know is that they appear somewhere, and Zerg units can come out of them. Anything beyond that is speculation. Though, I'd speculate they're just a nydus canal replacement.

Anyhoo, overlord design has changed. Well... from the 2D sprites, that is.

In SC1, Blizzard had all the concept art and full ideas of what the units looked like. What we saw in the game was somewhat different from this, due to the sprite limitations.

You can really tell what they looked like from the cinematics, eg.

It's good that now Blizzard can make the units look as they were intended, as they're no longer just 2D sprites

That being said, the overlord does look like it was intended, except for that new... green thing...

Hmm... thinking about it now, it could be there really for team colours. Actually, yeah, I could imagine that.

@ Crazyoldman: You're wrong about the cinematics/ingame thing. The cinematics are how they intended everything to look at the time the cinematics were made. I.E., alpha/beta. You'll notice that in the SC alpha/beta/whatever, rines do have grenades, hydras do melee, etc. You'll notice that the cinematic zerglings are like little 4 limbed hydralisks, not what they look like in their final portrait. Sprite limitations don't extend to portraits. The definitavely accurate designs are the 3D models from the time of the actual final game, i.e. the ones used to render the sprites that are pictured in the manual.

Oh, hobbiton, that's not really what I meant. Though I don't remember seeing a marine use a grendade, hydras can melle because they have long sythes ( I think I spelt that right).

That's just logical, really. If it's not in the gameplay, that's a completely different matter.

But in any case, their appearance definately hasn't really changed. The zerglings look like these "winged" four-legged things that run around. They didn't look like that in SC1, just from sprite limitations. And I would actually call the portrait deceiving, it only shows the head of a Zergling.

But most of the portraits are actually what the unit looks like, if it shows an adequate amount of the unit.

Oh, how about the large characters in the campaign selection screen? They all look like how they're meant too.

Also, SC1 lings in the cinematics have spikey segmented tails, 4 limbs, birdlike back-feet and scythes on their arms. SCG zerglings in cinematics have 4 legs, each with 2 large claws, much shorter tails, giant tusks, and 2 arms sticking out of their backs with scythes on them. SC2 zerglings have multiple scythlike blades on their regular arms and the arms coming out of their backs, and WINGS. They change their designs, just like all game companies do. The cinematics are different from the game. It's not just sprite limitations. Notice how the cinematic carriers don't have the large side fin-like projections that the sprite has? Things are different.

What's up with the new zerglings? I always thought that zerglings looked like raptors, or some type of lizard. And it's the same with the observor and the siege tank, the design was bettter in the origional starcraft. I wish they would have kept the old designs.

Well, at least the new overlord design is good.

Seriously, I wouldn't say Zerglings were shown in that much detail in the cinematics, if shown at all.

And they did have wings. And they did look like they do now.

Go watch the final cinematic in the Zerg campaign, for SC1 Original (not Broodwar), the one where the Overmind lands in Aiur (did I spell that right...mer..).

There's a flash of Zerglings running past. They have wingy things, and look like they do in SC2.

I eat people.
-Crazyoldman

Oh, PS:

If you want to see overlords, take a look at the cinematic before the overmind landing in Aiur, the one of the Zerg "warping".

There's a few overlords there, once again, looking very different to in-game.

Lol. StarShip troopers
Look a that slowy and green "doted" Overlord (¬¬ the only new unit) !!

I like both ling design.

@TheHybrid; there are Vikings in the frame, and maybe are a bit small, or in SC2, marines are too big, is a problem of units size. I think dificult to solve, because always one units are bigger or smaller than others, but yes, this difference is accepted between ground and air units, NOT between ground and ground units.

I sure look forward to the Hydralisk myself as well "DEADFAST"...as long as it's good, it's worth the wait! [Knightmare's Hydralisks automatically nod]

I don't really know about Pre-Beta..I'm studying 3D artwork as well as Game Design, and I think they probably have a few mre months in there...no doubt Blizzard's busier than a Zerg Hive cluster right now, just making StarCraft 2...still, I give the artists, both 3D and 2D, a THUMBS-UP for their excelent work...hope they don't mind if I learn from their style a little. LOL

I look forward to the updates on the Zerg, who are my favorite species for imitation...you probably never will hear a Zerg like me...I sound like I'm wounded...LOL

--KNIGHTMARE--

P.S. Will there be any means of adding new units, structures, tilesets, or doodads to the EDITOR???? I may sound crazy, and I understand its hard enough work to make a 3D StarEdit, but the Zerg inside me can't help asking. Nor can my hunger for all that wonderful innovation you guys have already integrated. XD

All I know is that i hope the new editor allows mappers to MAKE new units rather than simply modify existing ones. I'd like to have more than just two different marines, if I could.

Also, I hope it's as easy to pick up and use as StarEdit was. The WCIII Editor I never really got into.

Also, anyone know what the difference between a Zergling and a Baneling is? If I'm looking at this ss right, the Baneling looks like a Zergling stuffed into a green marshmallow. What significance does that unit have?
